1. What made you want to have a natural child birth?
The reason’s that I decided on a natural birth are mostly down to fear and distrust of the medical system. I have a pretty severe phobia of needles stemming from years of being poked and prodded as a child. Repeated stays in hospital for asthma, severe allergies, ear infections etc. After beginning my journey into natural health around 15 years ago anything new that I embark upon is always centered around the healthiest, most natural way. Initially I was looking for a midwife at a birthing center. I toured all the local ones and didn’t get a good vibe at all so was feeling pretty disheartened and didn’t really consider a home-birth until I met my midwife and that’s all she did. Best decision ever! The other reason has something to do with needing to feel like I was in control of my birthing experience, not wanting feel forced/pressured into iv’s, unnecessary testing, induction, c sections etc

2. Did you take any birthing classes to help you prepare for a natural birth?
Yes I used Hypnobirthing, the Mongan method, which was invaluable! And I did an 8 week course with Julie Frietas on natural birth. AMAZING!

3. Best advice you can give to someone who wants a natural childbirth but is afraid?
My best advice for anyone who wants natural birth but is afraid is to embrace your fear, really go there. Don’t avoid the feelings really allow yourself to feel them. Once you embrace the fear its not as scary. Also the hypnobirthing was so important for me as it really helps you to do this. I was not afraid at all. I was very calm and confident.

4. A quick tip you can share for first time moms or something you wish you had known before you became a mom?
I wish I had been prepared for how much breastfeeding hurts and how hard it is in the beginning. If I had really known this I think the first few weeks would have been somewhat easier and I would have been more prepared. And breastmilk cures everything! =)

After 3 months of bed rest, with early labor symptoms and constant contractions, I was having more intense and regular contractions, this went on for 3 days. My midwife came to check me repeatedly over those 3 days and no change. She came again as my contractions were getting a little more intense, a little after 8pm on the 27th and checked me and said there was still no change and that I should have a warm bath and half a glass of wine. She said this will either settle the contractions down or get them going! Who was I to turn down a little wine after all these months
After the bath I went to bed, contractions were getting closer together but after all these months, I didn’t really pay too much attention. We had given up timing them weeks before and as there was still no change at 8pm I figured just another false alarm.
At 2pm my water broke with a gush. We called the midwife. she told us she would be there at 6 as we still had a ways to go. My husband got on with filling the birthing tub and I spent with the next 2 hours in the bathroom. Oh the joys of labor and delivery.
At around 5 I had a seriously strong urge to push which completely freaked my husband out and he frantically got on the phone with the midwife. Luckily she lives 5 minutes from my house. 21 minutes after she arrived and 5 pushes later Jack Lucas Heinz was born! On his due date, with no complications at 7lb 7oz. So maybe not the quite the way we had planned to labor, at home alone and much faster than anyone anticipated but it all went perfectly.
